January 2008

1st - 9th
Bright and breezy start to the month after passage of cold front previous night. LP moves across N England on 2nd bringing a series of fronts and troughs with rain and squalls. Very unsettled with light/moderate rain and gales early morning of 5th followed by heavy showers, with a repeat performance on the 6th. A quite day on the 7th after a windy and showery night. A very deep low with complex frontal structure approaches from the WNW of Ireland with a pressure fall of -10 hPa in 3 hours, bringing more light/moderate rain from mid-morning to late afternoon. LP moves across C England on the 9th bringing the lowest air pressure here for many years and a showery day.
10th - 16th
HP builds from the W with a rise of over +50 hPa in 48 hours. Cloudy and breezy on the 10th but becoming calmer with sunny periods from the 11th. HP lies over SE England to Denmark giving largely clear skies until the 14th, when anticyclonic gloom takes over. Sunny day 16th.
17th - 23rd
HP drifts SSE, 17th is cloudy with a chilly wind, mostly sunny on the 18th, early fog 19th then sunny. Freezing fog helps keep temperature subzero on 21st, first "ice day" since Dec 2005. Freezing fog again on 23rd.
24th - 31st
HP to the SW and SE, two deep lows to the NW. As the temperature rises it becomes unsettled again. Christmas Day is very gloomy and rainy as fronts cross the UK. Boxing Day is bright and sunny before gloom returns with rain from evening of 28th and overnight. Dry and mild but mostly cloudy conditions to finish the year.
